This is book two of the three book Child of Shadow series. Book one, Child of Shadow, provides the background for the character named Miki, her family and her unknown destiny. We meet the brother she does not know about, the father who is not told of her true heritage, and her always watchful companion and bodyguard, Hisano, a true Kunoichi. Yes, the book can be read as a stand-alone book.
The Koga was a school for the arts of Ninjutsu, and one of twenty-three tribes that practice that art. Their enemy were the Iga. These groups would hire out to various Samurai clans as assassins, scouts, warriors, and spies, doing the jobs that the Samurai would never do themselves. A Kunoichi is a female ninja, and is normally trained for espionage work, as her sex made getting close to her target easier. Japan is a class based society depending on birth, and the Shinobi (ninja) are the lowest of all the classes. This class included undertakers, butchers, or anyone else who under Shinto tradition would be considered "unclean" because they handled death.
The story takes part in the northern mountainous region of early Japan during the period of the warring states. Provinces are run by powerful Samurai Lords called Daimyo, who seek power above all else.
